How to Start a Wedding Cake Business

When you are just starting in the wedding cake industry, you don’t need any social media.

However, there are two things you need to keep in mind:
1. Your future clients want to see your previous work before booking with you.
2. You need to find a way to attract those clients!

Here is your step-by-step guide to starting a wedding cake business:
1. Choose your cake style
You need to invest your time, look around, experiment, and make a decision on what style of cakes you are going to make. And think about all the ways you can stay in your line to improve your style and reveal new levels.
For me – I make wedding cakes, covered with fondant, lots of textures, and wafer paper flowers.

2. Build your portfolio
Now that you know your style – it is time to build your portfolio. All you need is to make 3 dummy cakes and decide on your flavors.
I offer Cake Portfolio Template, which is a digital download template with pre-written descriptions, so you can create your own professional-looking Wedding Cake Portfolio.

3. Develop your skills
When you have your portfolio, you’ve made all your decisions – it is time to work on your business skills! What do you need to do to change your mindset from a “home-baker” to a “business owner”?
I love listening to podcasts, especially based around solopreneurs. My favorites are the moment are Chill & Prosper and My First Million.

4. Connect with industry professionals
This is the fun part! When you are starting (or venturing into the luxury wedding market), you need to build mutually beneficial relationships with wedding industry professionals.
This is your opportunity to “sell” your cakes. Create your portfolio, make a few cake samples, and email 100 event planners, photographers, and florists! All you need is to set up 10 meetings with them. Even if every new connection will bring you two cake orders – it is 20 more cakes to add to your calendrer.
Like any social media, it is just a numbers game.

5. Collect testimonials
This is the most important part of the process! Your clients need proof that you’ve done that before! This is your way to showcase your expertise and provide your future clients with “insurance”.
If you just starting and you haven’t made any “paid” cakes – ask your friends to give you a testimonial on the favors of your cake, ask your event planners to review your designs, reach out to your past customers and ask for testimonials.

Now you have a road map on there to start building or growing your wedding cake business.
