How to Book More Wedding Cakes

A few months ago we had a conversation about whether you can have a profitable cake business without being on social media.

There are tree steps to take to book more wedding cakes this year:

1. Connect with your customers via email.
As soon as you get a request for a cake, reply with a simple message:

“Hello, XXX!
Congrats on your engagement! We would love to make a cake for you. Could you please provide us with the following information:
Date of your event
Location of your venue
Guest count
And your email address, so we can send you more information about our services.”

Always-always-always ask for an email address, so you can reach out to your customers! (Pro tip: if you a less introverted than me, ask for their phone number too!)

2. Connect with industry professionals.
Don’t wait for your social media to be hacked to build stronger relationships with event planners in your area. This is your opportunity to “sell” your cakes. Create your portfolio, make a few cake samples, and email event planners, photographers, and florists!

Even if every new connection will bring you two cake orders – you will have orders coming in without relying on social media. You can find my step-by-step guide here.

3. Build your following on Pinterest.
Don’t skip this step! Pinterest is my favorite marketing tool, And, according to Pinterest, there are 459 million people
actively using the platform and have saved over 200 billion ideas on more than 4 billion boards on the platform.
As it so happens, weddings are one of the most popular categories on Pinterest for brides and grooms. They create boards and fill them with pictures of wedding dresses, table decorations, wedding bouquets, and CAKES. So, yes, on Pinterest, you have an amazing opportunity to reach your dream clients even before they start looking for a wedding cake designer.

WHAT IS WAFER PAPER?

Wafer paper is an edible paper for cake decorating, typically starch-based. It is vegan, gluten-free, and free from most allergens. It closely resembles printer paper in texture, but it is edible and could be manipulated into beautiful florals and used for contemporary cake designs. Wafer Paper is also called Rice paper and the difference is the main ingredient.

Ingredients: potato starch (or rice starch), water, and vegetable oil.

It’s safe to eat and the flavor is very subtle — so it won’t interfere with what’s going on in your cake. You can condition wafer paper in all kinds of ways – create flowers and textures, so it’s so great for cake decorating.

What wafer paper should you buy? Here you can learn more about different grades of wafer paper.

STORAGE

Keep wafer paper in a clean Ziplock bag and store in a cool, dry place. Wafer paper can last quite some time (around 2 or 3 years on average) if stored correctly.

If your wafer paper is dry and crackly, watch this tutorial on how to fix it.
