Pricing your first cake requires more than covering ingredients. You also need to account for your labor, skill, time, and business expenses.
The first cake I ever sold was $65.
At the time, it felt like a big deal. Someone was willing to pay me for my work, and I wanted to do everything right.
I worked incredibly hard on a two-tiered birthday cake for a little girl.
Then the client told me she did not like it and asked me to remake it.
I was terrified, but I said yes.
Not because the request was reasonable. I said yes because I did not know how to lead a client conversation.
I had no boundaries, and I did not feel like an expert. I simply felt grateful to be chosen.
I thought I needed more skill
That experience stayed with me for a long time.
Later, when I moved to Chicago and decided to focus on wedding cakes, I dreamed of charging $1,000 or more one day.
But it did not feel realistic.
I told myself I was not good enough yet. I thought I needed more experience, more skill, and more confidence.
But that was not the real problem.
My actions were keeping me stuck
I was not leading my clients.
I was not setting clear expectations or creating boundaries.
I was not in charge of the conversation, the booking process, or the experience I was offering.
Without that structure, no price would ever feel justified to me.
Everything changed when I decided to step fully into the expert role.
Being the expert does not mean being pushy
It means giving the client a clear process.
You explain what happens next. You set expectations. You recommend the right options. And you make decisions easier.
When you confidently guide every part of the process, from the first inquiry to delivery day, clients do not feel pressured.
They feel relaxed, supported, and confident in their decision.
Your work should show how far you have come
You do not need to chase every trend or make every kind of cake.
You need the skills and direction to create wedding cakes that feel recognizably yours.
That is why I created the WAFER PAPER ACADEMY.
Inside the Academy, I teach you how to design one-of-a-kind wedding cakes, create delicate handcrafted flowers, and develop a style you are proud to show in your portfolio.
You can learn the techniques step by step and practice at your own pace, without feeling like you must already be an expert.
Your first cake does not define you. What you learn to create after it does.
