I feel very frustrated seeing this advice on the internet: “Just raise your cake prices and high-paying clients will come”.
So let’s talk about why that simply isn’t true!
First, you need to understand that there are 3 important components to booking wedding cakes:
#1 You should have a strong and clear portfolio that represents your style and communicates your value
#2 You should be consistent – in your quality and your presence. It is the most organic, tried-and-true method. Your clients should trust you before ordering a cake and it takes time to establish yourself as an expert in the industry – so you better start now.
#3 You need to build relationships with event planners! This is the most important step. You need to promote your cakes and make connections in the industry.
Here is your step-by-step guide for working with event planners:
- Make a list of wedding planners in your area who book high-end clients. My favorite way is to buy a local wedding magazine or search in Facebook groups for recommendations.
- Utilize this portfolio template. Customize it in Canva with your best cakes and add your brand colors, fonts, and social media links. Save as PDF to your computer.
- Write an email to every single planner in your area and attach your portfolio PDF to each email.
Need help writing that email? I’ve got you. Just use my script:
Hello, (insert planner’s name)!
My name is (your name) and I am delighted to introduce my company, (your business name), specializing in (describe your style) wedding and special events cakes for clients in (insert your city or area).
I feel like my work would complement your style and I’d be so honored if you’d consider me for future clients who might be a good fit.
I would love to arrange a time to show you my portfolio. I’ll bring cake!
And I have attached a PDF that contains examples of my work and some pricing details in regard to my wedding cake designs.
Thank you!
Warmly,
(Your name)
