How to Create Wafer Paper Olive Branch Step-by-step

Step 1: Prepare and Airbrush the Wafer Paper

Begin by airbrushing your wafer paper in an olive green color. Work on the bumpy side of the wafer paper for a textured effect.

Allow the paper to dry flat before proceeding.

Step 2: Make the Gold Olives

Use 22-gauge wire to create a small hook at one end for each olive.

Mix fondant with tylose or use gum paste for durability. Roll a small piece into a smooth, oval olive shape.

Insert the hooked wire into the olive and set it aside to dry.

Once dry, mix gold petal dust with vodka and paint the olives, including the stems, for a luxurious finish.

Step 3: Wire and Shape the Leaves

Cut 36-gauge wire into three equal pieces.

Apply AC Tonicâ„¢ to the white side of the airbrushed wafer paper. Fold the paper to sandwich the wire between two layers. Smooth down the layers and let them set slightly before cutting out freehand olive leaf shapes.

Shape the leaves by pinching the tops and adding gentle curves for a natural look. Allow the leaves to dry on a foam pad.

Step 4: Add Confectioner’s Glaze (Optional)

Apply a thin layer of confectioner’s glaze to the leaves for a realistic shine. Let the glaze dry completely before assembly.

Step 5: Assemble the Olive Branch

Use 20-gauge wire for the main stem. Start by taping a few small leaves to the top with light green floral tape. Gradually add more leaves and gold olives, layering them to create a natural arrangement.

Wrap the floral tape tightly as you go, ensuring the branch is secure. Bend the stem and branches slightly for a realistic, organic look.

Now you’re ready to create your own elegant wafer paper olive branches that will add charm and sophistication to your cake designs. These branches are lightweight, easy to make, and customizable to suit any design so feel free to experiment.
